On the morning of August 26, 2026 Mariculture Training Program for Pacific Island Countries officially commenced at Jimei University. Chen Guoquan, Deputy Director-General of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Fujian Provincial People’s Government, and Yang Shenhua, Vice President of Jimei University, attended and delivered remarks. Officials from the Xiamen Foreign Affairs Office, Fujian Marine Vocational School, and representatives from the university’s relevant schools and departments also participated in the opening ceremony.

Co-hosted by the China-Pacific Island Countries Poverty Alleviation and Development Cooperation Center, the Fujian Provincial Foreign Affairs Office, and the Fujian Provincial Ocean and Fisheries Bureau, the program is organized by Jimei University and Fujian Marine Vocational School. Twenty fishery officials and technicians from six Pacific island countries have gathered in Xiamen for a three-week intensive training course.

In his address, Chen Guoquan emphasized China’s longstanding partnership with Pacific island countries and highlighted Fujian’s practical expertise in marine aquaculture, disease control, seafood processing, and fishing port infrastructure. He called for expanded cooperation in marine fisheries, encouraged Fujian-based enterprises to explore business opportunities in the Pacific region, and promoted experience-sharing in poverty reduction and Juncao technology. He also noted that the Agreement on Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction entered into force earlier this year, and that China has applied to host its secretariat in Xiamen—making the training program particularly timely.

Vice President Yang Shenhua welcomed the participants and introduced Jimei University’s strong maritime academic foundation. He noted that the university’s fisheries discipline offers a complete talent development system and hosts national-level platforms such as the State Key Laboratory of Mariculture Breeding. The training curriculum, tailored to the practical needs of Pacific island countries, covers breeding, green aquaculture, disease control, and seafood processing for species including shrimp, abalone, oyster, and grouper. The program combines theoretical instruction, laboratory visits, and field trips to industrial bases.

At the ceremony, participant representative MISUKA expressed gratitude for the thoughtful arrangements and shared expectations to acquire advanced technologies for the benefit of their home countries’ fisheries development. The event also featured the presentation of university badges and commemorative gifts to the trainees.
