Ms. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, the fifth Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, visited Jimei University to deliver a keynote speech to faculty and students.
Attendees included officials from the Municipal Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, University Party Secretary Qiu Weijie, Standing Committee Member of the University Party Committee and Vice President Wang Jian, university administrators, faculty and student representatives, and all Hong Kong and Macao students, totaling over 600 participants.
Qiu Weijie and Wang Jian greeted Ms. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor and some chamber representatives for discussions. Qiu Weijie presented her with a commemorative gift on behalf of the university.
Ms. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor delivered a keynote speech titled “Upholding and Improving the Practice of ‘One Country, Two Systems’ in Hong Kong” and engaged in interactive exchanges with faculty and students present.
By tracing Hong Kong’s historical context, she reviewed the institutional background of “One Country, Two Systems,” introduced the constitutional order of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and the constitutional status of the Chief Executive. She shared her five-year experience as Chief Executive of the HKSAR, highlighting how, with the support of the Central Government and in accordance with the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China and the Basic Law of the HKSAR of the People’s Republic of China, she led Hong Kong in addressing significant challenges.
She stated that the current implementation of “One Country, Two Systems” has entered a new phase. Hong Kong must leverage its unique advantage of “being rooted in the motherland while connecting with the world,” integrate itself into the broader national development landscape, and make greater contributions to national rejuvenation and the building of a strong nation. She also highlighted her educational philosophy and practices during her tenure, as well as multiple talent initiatives implemented by the HKSAR government, welcoming more outstanding Jimei University students to pursue studies, careers, and development in Hong Kong.
Qiu Weijie remarked that Ms. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor’s speech was visionary and profound, offering invaluable guidance for all faculty and students to deepen their understanding of the great practice of “One Country, Two Systems”. He expressed his hope that all faculty and students would integrate their self-improvement into the national rejuvenation and the building of a strong nation, promoting exchanges and collaboration between the mainland and Hong Kong, maintaining Hong Kong’s long-term prosperity and stability, and advancing the modernization of China.
As one of the students remarked, “the lecture gave me a more vivid understanding of Hong Kong’s unique development and our shared heritage,” they expected more mobility and exchanges with Hong Kong youth, fostering mutual learning and shared growth.
Following the lecture, Ms. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor participated discussions with faculty and students on topics including youth development and cultural exchange.
During her visit, Ms. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor and her delegation also toured the university’s History Museum and the School of Navigation, gaining an in-depth understanding of the university’s academic tradition and developmental achievements.
